Tara Smeštaj: an accommodation portal for Mount Tara with a host dashboard and a mountain guide

Accommodation on Tara was scattered across classified sites, social media and booking platforms. We built a portal where hosts publish their own listings and receive enquiries with no commission, and guests also get a guide to the mountain.

Project background

About the client and the market

Tara is one of the most visited mountains in Serbia, but its accommodation is scattered: log cabins in the forest, apartments at Kaluđerske Bare, houses overlooking the lake, rooms in the villages. Many hosts have no website, and booking platforms take a commission on every booking.

Guests, for their part, aren’t just looking for a bed. They want to know where to stay (Kaluđerske Bare or Mitrovac), how to get there, what to do with children or a dog, and when it is at its best. Whoever answers those questions is the one guests trust when they choose where to stay.

The idea behind the project is simple: one portal for accommodation on Tara, from hosts who live there, with a guide that answers every question a guest has before they arrive.

The challenge

What needed solving

  • Hosts with no technical knowledge have to publish and update their listing and calendar themselves.
  • A commission-free model: enquiries and bookings go straight to the host.
  • Listing visibility that depends on the package, while search stays useful for guests.
  • Content that brings in guests before they start looking for a specific place to stay.

The solution

What we did

We developed our own WordPress plugin, “Tara Portal”. It covers the public side of the portal, the host panel and the admin area. A host opens an account, publishes a listing in Serbian and English, adds photos, the location and an availability calendar, and receives enquiries and bookings straight to their inbox. Listing packages set the number of photos and the position in search, and new hosts get their first six months free. Alongside the portal we are building a guide to Tara on the blog.

  • Our own plugin for the portal, host panel and admin area
  • Listings in Serbian and English, with photos and a Google map
  • An availability calendar the host manages
  • Enquiries and bookings straight to the host, with no commission
  • Guest reviews after the stay
  • Three listing packages: Basic, Standard and Premium
  • Pages by location and type of accommodation
  • A guide to Tara with 18 articles

In detail

How the solution is set up

Host panel

In their panel, hosts edit the description, photos and calendar, see enquiries and, on higher packages, how many times their listing has been viewed. No technical knowledge is needed.

Listing packages

The Basic package gives a listing with a description in two languages, photos, a map, a calendar and reviews. Standard adds a higher position in search, a “Recommended” badge and a place next to the guides. Premium adds a featured spot on the home page and first place on the location page.

Pages by location

Search and pages are organised by location (Kaluđerske Bare, Mitrovac, Zaovine, Perućac, Bajina Bašta) and by type of accommodation, the way guests actually search.

Guide to Tara

18 guides answer guests’ questions: Kaluđerske Bare or Mitrovac, how to get there, Tara with children and with a dog, trails and viewpoints, bears, Mokra Gora and the Šargan Eight railway, the Drina regatta, what to eat, what to pack, Tara in autumn and in winter.

Guides that sell accommodation

Guide pages show a “Places to stay nearby” block, so a guest reading about Zaovine also sees accommodation in Zaovine.

Admin area

The administrator approves listings and changes, and keeps track of package orders, bookings, reviews and messages from a single panel.

Process

How we worked, step by step

  1. Portal model. We defined the commission-free model, the packages and the rules for how listings appear in search.
  2. Plugin development. We built the public side, the host panel and the admin area in one plugin.
  3. Structure by location. We set up pages for locations and types of accommodation, with a map and filters.
  4. Guide to Tara. We wrote guides for the questions guests ask most and linked them to nearby accommodation.
  5. Onboarding hosts. We are launching the portal with its first hosts, with six months of free listings.

Visibility in Google and AI search

The guides are written as answers to questions guests really ask: “Kaluđerske Bare or Mitrovac: where should you stay?” gives a short answer in the first sentence and a comparison below. Google uses that format for featured snippets, and AI assistants use it for recommendations when someone asks “where to stay on Tara with children”.

For local and AI search, structured data about locations and accommodation matters too, as do consistent place names across the whole portal. When an AI tool looks for accommodation in Zaovine, the portal gives it a clear, verifiable answer.

Where it stands today

What is on the site today

The state of the portal on 1 November 2026:

  • Our own Tara Portal plugin with a public side, host panel and admin area
  • Three listing packages, with the first six months free
  • 18 published guides to Tara
  • The portal is onboarding its first hosts, with sample listings for display

We will publish enquiry figures once the portal has run for a full season.

Lessons

What you can apply to your own project

  • A commission-free portal attracts hosts who don’t want to hand part of their income to a platform.
  • A destination guide brings in guests before they start looking for accommodation.
  • The host panel has to be simple enough to use without help.
  • Search by location follows the way guests really search.

Who this approach is for

Who this approach suits

A bespoke portal makes sense when standard plugins don’t fit your business model: listings with packages, a user panel, commission-free bookings, guides tied to what you offer. The same approach works for destinations, associations, regional directories and specialist classifieds.

  • Tourist destinations and host associations
  • Classifieds with paid visibility packages
  • Portals that need a user panel and an admin area
  • Projects where content (a guide) sells the offer

FAQ

Questions about the Tara Smeštaj project

No. Enquiries and bookings go straight to the host, and the host keeps the full price of the stay.

They open an account, enter a description in Serbian and English, photos, the location and a calendar in their panel, and the administrator approves the listing.

In the number of photos, the position in search, and featured placement on the home page and location pages.

Before choosing where to stay, guests look for advice on locations, trails and getting there. The guide answers those questions and shows accommodation nearby.

Yes. The whole portal runs on our own WordPress plugin, developed for this project.

Key lessons

What Tara Smeštaj shows about accommodation portals

The Tara Smeštaj portal has two kinds of user: hosts who publish listings and guests looking for somewhere to stay. A portal only works if both sides have a reason to come back. That is why Tara Smeštaj is not just a list of listings but also a guide to the mountain.

What turned out to matter most

  • A panel for hosts. Hosts change photos, prices and availability themselves, without waiting for an administrator.
  • Guides that bring in visitors. Articles on trails, viewpoints and day trips rank for searches by people planning a trip, so Tara Smeštaj gets visitors before they have chosen a place to stay.
  • No commission. Enquiries go straight to the host, which is the main reason hosts choose Tara Smeštaj over a booking platform.

The same model can work for any mountain, spa town or tourist region. Have a look at marketing for hotels and tourism and SEO services; you will also find useful advice for local tourism content in Google’s SEO starter guide.
